Call 112 or 193 (fire service). Smoke is more dangerous than flames: even a short exposure can make you lose consciousness.
In a building
- If vegetation around the building is burning and you can't get out safely: close doors, windows and every opening and gap smoke could come through.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a mask or a wet cloth.
- If you have a fire extinguisher, use it. Electrical fires aren't put out the same way as paper or wood.
- Move away from anything flammable. Never go through fire.
- If your clothes catch fire: lie on the floor and roll.
- Help others, especially people with limited mobility, the sick and children.
Outdoors
- When the local authorities order an evacuation, leave at once.
- Find a place with no vegetation or anything else that burns.
- Protect your face with a wet cloth.
- If the fire hasn't reached your house and there's time, you can wet the trees, grass and roof around it. Only if it doesn't put you or anyone else at risk.
- By the sea, if the fire is spreading fast and you can't get away: go into the sea where you can still stand and wait there for rescuers.
- Away from the sea, look for shelter among rocks. Watch the wind direction, because it can change.
- If there's no sea or rock and you can't escape: lie face down, cover yourself with earth, and put a wet cloth over your face.
In a vehicle
- Don't wait in the car for the fire to reach you. Get out and find a place without vegetation.
