When a flood threatens
- Follow the DHMZ warnings and Croatian Waters river levels.
- Move valuables higher up.
- Store drinking water: during and after a flood, water from the mains, wells and other sources may be contaminated. Don't drink it.
- Be ready to evacuate with your kit.
During a flood
- When the authorities call for evacuation, leave at once, while the recommended routes are still passable.
- Shut off the mains power, gas and water.
- If the water traps you at home, get as high as you can.
- If you're outside, move away from the flooded area.
- Don't walk through floodwater, and don't drive, cycle or ride through it.
- If you're in a car and can't safely reach dry ground, leave it and climb somewhere high.
- Help others, especially people with limited mobility, the sick, children and people with disabilities.
- Take pets with you if you can. If it's too late to evacuate livestock, leave their shelters open so they can get out.
- Listen to announcements on radio and television.
After a flood
- Work with the emergency services on the clean-up. Buildings, wells and yards need disinfecting and dead animals removing, because of the health risk.
- Don't switch on installations that were under water until a professional has checked them.
- If you have to travel, check the road conditions.
