The nearest nuclear power plants are Krško in Slovenia and Paks in Hungary. In a nuclear or radiological accident the authorities decide on protective measures for the affected area, and the immediate danger signal sounds.
What to do
- If you're outside when the danger is announced, go indoors at once.
- Close all doors and windows and switch off ventilation and air conditioning.
- Seal gaps around doors and windows with wet towels or duct tape.
- Turn on the radio or television and follow the instructions.
- In a possibly contaminated area, don't eat, drink or smoke.
- Don't drink fresh milk or water from the affected area. Eat fresh food from there only as the authorities advise.
If you were outside during the accident
- Get indoors as soon as you can, take off all clothes and shoes and seal them in a plastic bag.
- If you can, shower with warm water and soap.
- Once you've left the contaminated area, tell the authorities you may have been exposed and hand them the bag.
