Croatian civil protection warns that in most disasters damaged infrastructure means no electricity. Then the TV, Wi-Fi and chargers stop working, and the mobile network may be overloaded or lose power.
How you'll find out what's happening
- A battery radio (or the car radio). Official instructions go out on radio and television, and a radio works without mains power. That's why it's on the kit list.
- Sirens. They work without your power or internet. Learn the three signals.
- Phone alerts (HR-Alert). They reach every phone connected to a mobile network in the affected area, with no app and no internet. The phone needs signal and battery.
- This site. If you've opened it before, it works offline.
Prepare in advance
- A power bank and a car charger.
- Cash. Cards and cash machines don't work without power and network.
- Phone numbers on paper. Once the phone is flat, its contacts are no help.
- An agreed meeting place and a place for written notes, from your family plan.
- A torch and spare batteries instead of candles wherever you can.
- Water and food for 3 days, because pumps and shops depend on power too.
Safety at home
- Air rooms where a stove or gas appliance is burning. Croatian civil protection recommends a carbon monoxide detector in every room with a heater or boiler.
- If you smell gas: open windows and doors at once, get people out, don't light or switch on anything, call the fire service (193 or 112).
- Don't call 112 to ask when the power will be back. Outages and planned cuts are published by HEP ODS.
