Thunderstorms and strong wind: what to do

Follow the DHMZ warnings. If you have to travel, check the road conditions.

Thunderstorms

A solid building is the safest place. When you hear thunder or see lightning, get into a house, a building or a car.

Put off whatever you're doing outdoors.
Shelter low down: a hollow or ditch, in woods under bushes or lower trees.
Not under a tall isolated tree, and not in a small isolated shed.
Avoid hilltops, open fields and beaches.
If you're swimming or fishing, get out of the water and find shelter.
Keep away from anything metal: tractors, machinery, motorbikes, bicycles.
If your hair stands on end or you hear crackling, lightning is close: crouch, lower your head, cover your ears with your hands, close your eyes and open your mouth.

Pull off the road, away from trees and buildings, somewhere as open as possible.
Avoid underpasses and tunnels where water collects.

Follow the forecasts and warnings for strong wind and storms.
Keep strong plastic sheeting or a tarpaulin, battens and nails to hand for temporary repairs to a roof or a broken window.

Close windows and doors firmly, lower the blinds or close the shutters.
Move away from glass, into the inner part of the building.
If the building isn't solidly built and hurricane-force gusts or a tornado are forecast: shelter in a basement or a solid building, and first shut off water and gas at the main valve and power at the main switch.
Listen to announcements on the radio.

Walk bent forward, on the sheltered side if there is one, holding on to something solid.
Don't shelter under trees: branches break, trees fall, and lightning can strike.
When driving, follow warnings and closures. If storm-force wind catches you on an open road, stop off the carriageway, in natural shelter if you can.
At sea, don't use light craft without an engine: inflatables, plastic boats, pedalos, surfboards.
